Welcome!

So you’ve found the site. Now what?

Well, the site is still reflecting my preparation for the 2019 spring semester. As always, I am planning few changes in the way this course is taught to reflect both the current state of the news industry and the specific needs of Georgia Southern students who are studying communications. There might be some minor changes to the syllabus, so keep checking in as I update it.

Start reading. Begin with the syllabus for an overview. Try clicking on the pages (black bar) and topics (gray bar) menus above, first, so you can get a better understanding of this course.

Please be advised that we are now requiring the use of a digital single lens reflex (DSLR) camera and lens for this course. You will be learning how to control your camera’s most important settings in manual mode. The university has added more camera kits that will be available for checkout, but note that they are for the entire Com Arts department, so there’s no guarantee one will be available when you need one, and you can check them out only for individual assignments. You cannot check them out for extended periods of time.

While there should be enough university camera kits available for all students in this class, I still recommend that you purchase, borrow, or rent a camera and lens for this class, if you can. On a tight budget? Read this post: Buying camera gear for this class on a budget.

Already have a camera? Make sure it meets the requirements for this class: Camera Requirements. If you’re still not sure, bring your camera to class.

Know what you’re getting into. First and foremost, this class in NOT an introduction to photography. Again, read the syllabus so you know what to expect. We’ll go over this during the first class.

Learn about your instructor. Watch the audio slideshow linked at the end of my bio. Tell me what you think. I try to be as available and accessible as possible. Feel free to message or text me, email me, call me, or even drop by the Statesboro Herald and talk to me if you have any questions or concerns.

Learn about using this blog/web site. You may be required to become users with “author” status so you can post material, as you may be uploading some of your shooting assignments to this site. Everyone will receive an email invitation to join the site. If you already have a WordPress account, this should be familiar to you. If you are new to WordPress, simply follow the directions in the email.

We have a Facebook group: GSU Photojournalism. We’ll be using it to keep in touch and share links. Send me a request to join, now, if you like. You’ll be required to join once the semester starts.

Got questions or concerns about equipment, software or supplies you might need for this class? First, read the syllabus, then click on the “GEAR” and “TECHNICAL” tabs to learn more.

Just explore and check out links as you have time. Like I said, I’m still in the process of resetting everything on this site after using it last semester. If you encounter any glitches or are confused about references to previous classes, let me know and I’ll try to clarify for you.

Feel free to contact me any time with questions or concerns. You have my email, now. You have my phone number. Don’t hesitate!

I’m looking forward to working with all of you!
