Follow up on class from 1/30 and semester review, so far

First, thanks for your patience during class yesterday. It had to be done, step-by-step, so we are all on the same page in order to proceed with this class. We now have the basics so we can move forward to practice our skills and expand our knowledge.

First, just a quick review:

Class 1:

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses of photography as a means of communicating the news: review the handout on Visual Literacy and the class presentation on the subject.

Class 2:

  1. Understanding the basics and the necessity of technical control: review the handout on Technical Control and check out the links on the Topical Links page under the heading “photography basics” for further reading and understanding.
  2. The Shooter’s Mantra – this is the basic approach to making photographs that communicate something relavent, every time you look through your camera. There is no handout, as I wanted you to write down the steps and memorize them. However, you can review the class presentation – JOUR3333_Basics –  to see examples and review the concepts.
  3. AP Style captions – Please take time to review this handout AND review the presentation so you are familiar with the style of caption writing for this class (and for the professional world).

Class 3:

  1. Understanding basic digital workflow. Once you’ve made your images, you need to know how to download, edit, process, apply captions and other metadata to the image files, and how to publish/share your photographs. Read your handout: Digital Workflow Basics.
  2. While I showed you one workflow using Adobe Bridge/Photoshop software and WordPress, learn other options and how to utilize those options with software on your own personal computer. Read “Software – what you’ll need for this course …” for more information, and please feel free to contact me if you need some help with this.

As I said, this forms the foundation for this course. So review and let me know if you have any questions or need clarification. This class is offered by the Communication Arts department, so let’s communicate!
